Last week DJ and I met with our officiant. Actually, we took our officiant and his wife out for sushi, since they're our friends. Our friend/officiant always reminds me vaguely of Captain Jack Harkness.
So, Captain Jack. We asked him to do the job partly because of his stage voice, but also because he and his wife seem to like being married.
He's really enthusiastic about officiating, which was surprising and awesome. He already had a tabbed file of ideas, sample ceremony orders, and instructions for obtaining a marriage license. After going through an online ordination process (type credit card, print certificate) he called the Lake County offices to find out what paperwork they needed to legally recognize him.
And... nothing. Apparently unless someone challenges his authority to perform weddings, it's all good. Even better, if at least one of the parties being married believes he has the authority, it's a valid marriage. Cool! I believe, I do.
Anyone else having a friend officiate? Any stories, advice, warnings?

Zane's Dad officiated for us. I wouldn't have had it any other way.
The Rabbi who taught my Bat Mitzvah class (at the very ripe Bat Mitzvah girl age of 23 not your usual 12) is officiating our wedding. I consider him a friend :) does that count?
As long as he knows that he's really going to be marrying you, and in front of a bunch of people. The friend of the couple at my 4th of July wedding said he started getting shaky when he saw the bride and groom up there, looking down at him, waiting for him to start. He told me that was when he realized it was serious business marrying people. :)
Captain Jack? Really?
Jules - it's my daaaaay, I can call him Captain Jack if I want to. Unless he asks me to stop, I suppose. But he won't!
S. and I were married by a very wonderful Justice of the Peace, who has since moved on to bigger things. Also, if Capt. Jack is unable to serve, let me know, as I am always up for an opportunity to use my Universal Life Church online ordination.
thelass, don't tease. This implies that you plan to make the trip.
Wow. Captain Jack? That's quite a legacy to live up to. I can only hope that your guests who read this aren't going to be disappointed when they meet me.
Still digging into ceremony ideas, now with the focus on what to say, rather than how to say it.
Fun!
