a veil(ed) question

(Also at EAD - some of this is rehashed from earlier posts that were only published here.)
I need help, please. And not in a tell-me-about-a-time-when-you-felt-like-the-protagonist way. No, this time I really need help. Please?

I'm having trouble deciding on a veil, and I'm stuck. Part of the decision is already made – my mom cried when she saw me in a long (chapel) veil, and it’s very pretty with the dress.

But I want something more. Something puffy. Something like this. The bride designed it, and her mother in law made it. It has four pieces. I'm utterly in love with it. You can see more here and here.
Okay, it's huge. I would want mine somewhat less tall.

This one is maybe more wearable (for me.) This bride couldn't find what she wanted, so she made her own.
Each of these girls is wearing her pouf with a longer veil, which is what I would do. I might set the pouf a bit lower on my head, but still. You get the idea – there would be pouf. I would also probably ditch the long veil for the reception, but keep the pouf.

So here's where I'm not sure. They are both wearing narrow mermaid dresses. My dress is a-line. Would there be just to much volume if I wore a big veil with a not-straight skirt?
Of course, I also promised not to show the dress to the whole world, which makes the question more general than I'd like. Any thoughts on wearing a puffy veil with an a-line dress?

I actually suspect some width to the skirt would balance out the veil better than a straight dress, but you should try it on to make sure. One thing to think about with the puffy kind -- will you still like it in photos 10-25-50 years from now? My mom, who got married in 1965 wore a very puffy veil (with a narrow column dress) and she very much regrets the veil in retrospect because it looks so dated and distracts from the dress, which was simple and gorgeous, made of hand-knotted Venetian lace. Fads come and fads go. Wedding pictures last a long time, whatever you choose, make sure you'll still be happy to see yourself wearing it a few decades down the line. Of course, my mom is teeny tiny and part of the problem was that the veil was overwhelming on her. On the other hand, it gave my brother and I lots of excellent things to rib her about when we were looking through the old photos ("What's that on your head? Are you carrying your wedding cake under there?"). She still keeps the veil in a box under her bed.

I say go for it. Seriously, even if you don't like your pictures they can be a great reminder of what was important to you at this point in life. If your heart longs for it, it will look fine to have it. But that is my decorating/dressing style. Things we love AUTOMATICALLY go together just because we love them, right? :)

I agree with Harriet about 'in photos'. In fact, that was my first thought when I saw the images you'd put up. The poofy veil is fun, but the traditional veil will look... well, classical and timeless when you're celebrating your 50th anniversary.

I loved curling my bangs a mile high in junior high, but I'd rather not have a reminder of it now ;)

If at all possible, I think you should try the veil on with your dress and go from there. If it's something you REALLY love then go for it but if you have any doubts I would say no.

Hmm. Good question. I think it is tougher to do with an a-line dress. How much A vs. how much line? How much lace and bling etc? What part of your frame is straight or curvy...hard to answer in the abstract. Best to take a peek yourself as has been suggested.

Harriet - like I said earlier, you're convincing!
Liz - ordinarily that's my philosophy also, but I don't have as much practice choosing veils. (deadpan)
LL - yeah, I know. It's classic vs. possibly regrettable but I don't know that yet.
Jenny and LPC - all good points.

I'm leaning against the extra pouf, at the moment. Thanks for putting words on the pros and cons!

Hey there-- been lurking for a minute, but finally thought I could add something useful to the convo!
Just saw this veil on Anna Kuperberg's latest blog post, and perhaps it offers a nice medium? A little poof and sass, but still classic (for the "50 years photo test"). I do agree, trying on the veil with dress would be best, but honestly... do what you want!
